Extending the „Jump and Channel Model“ for the Prediction of Droplet Separation in Coalescing Filters

Oil mists (submicron oil droplets) are usually produced as an undesirable by-product in various processes. They are removed, as they pose a risk to human health, process safety, and the environment. Coalescing filters are commonly used for the removal of oil mist, which consist of several individual layers that are usually made of micro glass fibers During operation, three functional regions develop in the filter: a coalescence region, a channel region, and a film region. These regions are not sharply separated and do not necessarily coincide with the individual filter layers. Each region contributes differently to the overall filter penetration, depending on several parameters, such as gas velocity, the wettability of the filter medium, its degree of saturation, and its structural properties.

The aim of the project is to provide a tool that can be used to predict the individual penetration contributions of the coalescence, channel, and film regions of coalescence filters for different saturations.
